Revolutionary AI System Triumphs in Saving Assam’s Elephants: A Heartfelt Breakthrough for Train Safety
In a commendable display of vigilance and technology, a potential tragedy was averted when a herd of elephants was saved from a collision with a train in Assam. On October 16, the alert loco pilots of the 15959 Kamrup Express, traveling from Guwahati to Lumding, spotted elephants crossing the tracks between Habaipur and Lamsakhang. They swiftly engaged the emergency brakes, successfully preventing an accident.
An AI-based Intrusion Detection System (IDS) was instrumental in this prevention, providing timely alerts to the train crew. This system, employing optical fiber technology to detect animal movements, has proven to be an effective tool in wildlife protection, according to NF Railway. The organization has announced plans to expand the IDS across all elephant corridors in the region to enhance safety measures further.
NF Railway’s commitment to safeguarding elephants spans various strategies, including clearing vegetation near railway tracks and cooperating with the Forest Department. These initiatives have significantly reduced the incidence of elephant-train collisions. In 2023, NF Railway reported the successful protection of 414 elephants, and as of October 16, 2024, the number reached 383.
These efforts underscore the importance of integrating human vigilance with advanced technology to protect wildlife. The proactive measures taken by NF Railway reflect a broader commitment to environmental conservation and ensuring the safety of India’s precious wildlife.
