Urgent: Nagaland’s Future at Stake as ENPO Sets Crucial Oct 31 Deadline for FNT Comments to Centre
Kohima, Oct 12: The Eastern Nagaland People’s Organisation (ENPO), a prominent body representing eight tribes, has once again urged the Nagaland government to submit its comments on the “Frontier Nagaland Territory” (FNT) to the central government by October 31. This demand emerged from a recent coordination and consultative meeting in Mon town, where various tribal organizations under the ENPO banner convened to address the stagnation of the FNT issue.
The ENPO expressed its dissatisfaction with the state government’s inaction, attributing the ongoing stalemate to unspecified reasons known only to the authorities. This is the third instance in two months where the ENPO has communicated with the state government, emphasizing the pressing nature of the matter. Previously, on September 14, the ENPO invoked Article 164 (2) of the Indian Constitution, which emphasizes “the spirit of collective responsibility,” in a letter urging the government to consider the issue with due seriousness.
The Neiphiu Rio administration was earlier tasked by the Union government to provide feedback on a draft memorandum of settlement (MoS) related to the FNT. The urgency was further underscored on December 8, 2023, when Union Home Minister Amit Shah shared key details of the draft MoS with the Nagaland government, urging prompt action.
The ENPO, advocating for the FNT due to the perceived underdevelopment of the region, represents six districts: Kiphire, Longleng, Mon, Noklak, Shamator, and Tuensang. Demonstrating resolve, eastern Nagaland residents had boycotted the 60th statehood celebration during the Hornbill Festival last year and abstained from voting in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. Looking ahead, tribal organizations from eastern Nagaland are slated to meet on November 1 to strategize further actions.
The deadlocked situation around FNT continues to stir political and social discourse, spotlighting the challenges and aspirations of Eastern Nagaland’s communities.
