Unveiling the Sacred: Discover the Untold Stories of Tamil Nadu’s Folk Deities and Oral Traditions
Nagercoil’s T Elstin Raj and his team from the start-up Rec709 are set to make waves in the documentary film scene with “Sacred Stones,” a 40-minute exploration of Tamil Nadu’s folk deities. The team’s journey into documentary filmmaking started with a keen interest in the cultural tapestry of Kanyakumari, and they have already produced over ten short documentaries on the region’s people and customs. Inspired by their visit to the International Documentary and Short Film Festival of Kerala, they embarked on their most ambitious project yet—capturing the essence of folk deities beyond Kanyakumari and spanning South Tamil Nadu. With insights from experts like historian Chenthee Natarajan and writer SJ Sivashankar, the documentary has sparked viral interest and discussions online, highlighting its cultural significance. Currently in its second phase of production, “Sacred Stones” delves into unique cultural elements, such as the sumaithangi stones used by villagers to rest their burdens. Supported by Che Media, the team, led by director and cinematographer S Viswanathan and producer R Imayaselvan, aims to complete filming by March next year before presenting it on the film festival circuit.
