Shocking Security Breach: Morigaon Jailer Suspended After Five Under-Trial Prisoners Escape
Assam Jailbreak Incident Leads to Suspension and Inquiry
In a significant administrative move, Prasanta Saikia, the jailer of Morigaon District Jail in Assam, was suspended following an alleged jailbreak involving five under-trial prisoners. The swift suspension occurred within 24 hours of the incident, with reports suggesting that other jail officials might also face disciplinary actions, including potential "punishment" postings.
In response to the jailbreak, the jail’s superintendent, Manas Das, was transferred to Hemren Jail. The incident, which unfolded between midnight and 2 AM on October 11, 2024, involved prisoners affiliated with cases under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. The escapees were identified as Saifuddin, Ziarul Islam, Nur Islam, Mafidul, and Abdul Rashid. It is reported that they broke the cell bars and scaled the jail walls using makeshift ropes made of clothes.
To address the breach, the District Commissioner has ordered a magisterial-level inquiry, led by Additional District Magistrate Pallavi Kachary, to investigate the incident thoroughly. The inquiry aims to deliver a comprehensive report urgently for subsequent necessary actions.
Efforts are ongoing to apprehend the escaped prisoners, although no significant leads have been reported so far. The daring escape has raised concerns about prison security and the effectiveness of jail management in the region.
This incident comes amidst other news in Assam, including the tragic electrocution of a mother and son in Orang and the Indian Army’s initiative to upgrade the Tinsukia club to promote sports among local youths.
