Shocking Revelation: Jason Blum Exposes the Devastating Impact of Hollywood Strikes
In a recent appearance on Sean Evans’ YouTube show Hot Ones, horror film producer Jason Blum discussed the significant impact of last year’s Hollywood writers’ and actors’ strikes on the industry, noting that the strikes had “made the pie smaller” by reducing the number of available jobs, despite some individuals receiving higher pay. Blum highlighted that this setback compounded the challenges already faced by cinemas due to the pandemic, stating it severely affected the theatrical business, though he remains optimistic about its recovery.
Blum, founder of Blumhouse Productions, known for cost-effective horror films, recently merged his company with Atomic Monster, another independent producer. This partnership posed challenges due to differing film-making approaches. Blumhouse gained initial success with 2007’s Paranormal Activity, turning a $15,000 investment into nearly $200 million in global ticket sales. The company secured a 10-year first-look deal with Universal Pictures in 2014.
Blum’s production credits include successful films such as Insidious, Sinister, The Purge, Get Out, and M3GAN. The company plans to release a record nine films in 2025, featuring sequels like M3GAN 2.0, The Black Phone 2, and Five Nights at Freddy’s 2. Reflecting on the recent merger with James Wan’s Atomic Monster, Blum acknowledged the difficulties but expressed optimism about the future. “Next year we’ll prove if we are right or we were wrong,” he remarked.
