Empowering Communities: New Police Station and Outposts Combat Ethnic Violence with Compassion and Strength
Strengthening Security Amid Ethnic Violence in Manipur
Imphal: In response to ongoing ethnic violence, the Indian government has authorized an increase in police presence in Manipur. Chief Minister N Biren Singh’s cabinet has decided to establish a new police station and two additional police outposts, according to sources close to the Chief Minister. This decision emerged from a cabinet meeting at the CM’s secretariat.
The new police station will be located in Joujangtek village, positioned at the intersection of Sadar Hills (Kangpokpi), Churachandpur (Sonpi), and Tamenglong/Noney districts. Additionally, police outposts will be set up in Nungsai village, Khoupum Tehsil in Tamenglong district, and at Singda Dam, about 19 kilometers from Imphal in the Imphal West district.
Manipur currently has 42,000 state police officers distributed across 44 police stations. This expansion includes opening one police station and equal numbers of outposts in the hill districts and one in the adjoining valley district of Imphal West, near Kangpokpi district.
Following Manipur’s merger with India in 1949, the state maintained five police stations and seven outposts. Currently, over 60,000 central security personnel, including Assam Rifles, CRPF, ITBP, and the Indian Army, support the state’s civil administration to manage the ethnic unrest.
The violence, which began on May 3, 2023, has claimed more than 230 lives so far. Authorities hope the strengthened police presence will help restore peace and order in the troubled regions.
