Thrilling Victory: Sikkim’s State-Level Band Competition Winners Advance to Zonal Finals
On October 9, the State Project Office of Samagra Shiksha, Education Department, hosted the 2024 State-Level Inter School Band Competition at the West Point SSS Ground. This event is an integral part of an extensive multi-tiered competition culminating in a national showdown at New Delhi’s War Memorial on January 26, Republic Day.
The occasion was graced by Raju Basnet, the Minister of Education, Sports & Youth Affairs, Law & Parliamentary Affairs Departments, who inaugurated the event as the chief guest. The gathering also saw key figures including Sonam Denzongpa, Principal Director of the Education Department, and AD Chettri, Additional Director from Samagra Shiksha, along with various joint directors and officials from the Education Department.
A total of eleven schools from Sikkim showcased their musical prowess, delivering finely orchestrated and expertly synchronized performances. The judging panel comprised PB Gurung from the State Reserve Lines, Narendra Bardewa of the Culture Department, and Nirmal Ramudamu, ASI, Sikkim Armed Police.
In the Girls Brass Band category, West Point Senior Secondary School clinched first place. The Boys Pipe Band competition saw North Sikkim Academy, Mangan, Tashi Namgyal Academy, Gangtok, and Soreng Senior Secondary School, Soreng, securing top honors. Meanwhile, Namchi Girls Senior Secondary School, Namchi, Deorali Girls Senior Secondary School, Gangtok, and Paljor Namgyal Girls Senior Secondary School, Gangtok, emerged victorious in the Girls Pipe Band competition. Consolation prizes were awarded to Holy Cross School, Tadong, Modern SSS, Tashi Namgyal SSS, and Kumari Pema Tsedum Govt. S.S. Rongli.
Sushil Tamang, coordinator of Samagra Shiksha, delivered the vote of thanks. Asha Khatri, Joint Director of Samagra Shiksha, served as the Master of Ceremony, while Pempa Tshering Lepcha, Deputy Director cum Nodal Officer of the Inter-School State Band Competition, coordinated the event. This state-level competition serves as a stepping stone for participants to advance to the zonal and national levels.
