Boeing Abruptly Withdraws Contract Offer: Union Negotiations End in Disappointment and Frustration
Boeing Co. faces a significant manufacturing halt as approximately 33,000 factory workers, represented by the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers, continue their strike at Boeing’s Everett facility in Washington. The strike, which began on September 13, 2024, marks the first such walkout in 16 years at Boeing’s Seattle hub, affecting aircraft production in the Puget Sound area. The impasse arose after the union members overwhelmingly rejected a tentative labor contract, despite Boeing later enhancing the offer with increased pay raises, a ratification bonus, and other benefits.
Boeing withdrew the contract offer and declared further negotiations pointless, according to Stephanie Pope, CEO of Boeing’s commercial aircraft unit. She noted that the union’s demands were non-negotiable and exceeded what Boeing could offer while staying competitive. On the other hand, the union criticized Boeing for not improving key aspects such as wages, retirement plans, and leave policies.
The ongoing strike could cost Boeing over $1 billion monthly, according to S&P Global Ratings, which also issued a negative outlook on the aerospace company’s credit. As negotiations stall, the economic and operational impact on Boeing becomes increasingly severe, with no resolution in sight.
