Shocking Plunge: Sensex Crashes 950 Points, SmallCap Index Nosedives 4% – Discover Why the Markets Collapsed Today!
On Monday, the Indian stock market witnessed significant volatility, with the BSE Sensex plunging by 962 points, or 1.17%, to settle at 80,726.06. Similarly, the NSE Nifty50 dropped 244 points, or 0.97%, to 24,770 during intraday trading. Though markets started in the green, early gains were quickly wiped out, mainly due to concerns over the Israel-Iran conflict and aggressive selling by foreign investors favoring cheaper markets in China and Hong Kong.
Key contributors to the decline included major stocks like HDFC Bank, Reliance Industries, NTPC, Axis Bank, and Larsen & Toubro, with NTPC and Adani Ports both falling by 4%. While most sectors closed in the red, Nifty IT was an exception, gaining 0.47%. However, sectors like Nifty Media and Nifty Metal saw declines of over 3% and 2.44%, respectively. Broader market indices also suffered, with the BSE SmallCap index down 3.86% and the BSE MidCap index falling 2.61%.
Analysts highlighted a familiar pattern in which small-cap stocks underperform after periods of rallying. This current downturn is attributed to overvaluation, with the ongoing geopolitical tensions acting as a catalyst for the market’s self-correction. Foreign institutional investors have sold a substantial amount of Indian stocks, exacerbating the decline, while domestic institutional investors are likely to seize this opportunity to buy undervalued quality stocks.
Technical analysis suggests that the Nifty50 is nearing a robust support level at 24,800, which could serve as a platform for recovery. Meanwhile, global markets presented a contrasting picture with strong performances from Asian indices like Japan’s Nikkei and South Korea’s Kospi. As Indian markets continue their adjustment, analysts suggest that short-term traders might find attractive opportunities at these emerging support levels.
