Urgent Warning: East Siang DC Urges Responsible Gun Ownership to Protect Wildlife and Community Safety
East Siang District Deputy Commissioner Tayi Taggu has issued a stern warning to firearm license holders in Arunachal Pradesh’s villages, particularly Seram, emphasizing that lending guns to hunters will incur the same penalties as hunting, including imprisonment. This announcement was made during an event for National Wildlife Week in Seram village on October 5, organized by the Eco-Development Committee of D. Ering Wildlife Sanctuary, in partnership with the sanctuary itself and the NGO Aaranyak.
The event spotlighted wildlife crime prevention and anti-drug campaigns and included several notable figures such as Superintendent of Police Dr. Sachin Kumar Singhal and Divisional Forest Officer Kempi Ete. A tree plantation drive also took place, aiming at fostering environmental awareness among attendees.
Amit Modi, President of the Eco-Development Committee, expressed hope that messages delivered on wildlife conservation and anti-drug efforts would resonate with the villagers. Meanwhile, DFO Kempi Ete emphasized ongoing endeavors to relocate rhinos to enhance the sanctuary’s tourism appeal, while Maksam Tayeng, Chairman of the Eco-Development Committee, lauded efforts to reduce hunting activities and initiate the reintroduction of rhinos and tigers with government support.
Taggu underscored the misuse of guns, indicating that many offenders in D. Ering Wildlife Sanctuary had weapons lent to them by others, including retired officials. He urged vigilance against illegal activities harming ecological balance, and advocated community cooperation in protecting forests and wildlife.
The initiatives aim to rejuvenate the sanctuary, support eco-tourism, and provide employment for local youth, while addressing the pressing issues of wildlife conservation and drug addiction in the community.
