Maldives President Embarks on Landmark 5-Day India Visit: Strengthening Ties and Fostering Unity
Maldives President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu is set to arrive in New Delhi today for a five-day state visit to India aimed at strengthening bilateral ties. His itinerary includes significant engagements with Indian leadership, notably a meeting with President Droupadi Murmu and discussions on pertinent bilateral, regional, and international issues with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. These talks underscore the pivotal role the Maldives plays in the context of India’s Security and Growth for All in the Region (SAGAR) initiative and its Neighbourhood First Policy.
In addition to his engagements in New Delhi, President Muizzu is scheduled to travel to Bengaluru and Mumbai, where he will participate in business-related events. This visit follows the recent trip by India’s External Affairs Minister to the Maldives, highlighting the mutual commitment to enhancing cooperation and fostering strong people-to-people connections between the two countries.
India and the Maldives share a strategic partnership, with the latter being a crucial maritime neighbor in the Indian Ocean Region. President Muizzu’s visit is expected to further cement this relationship, building on his earlier trip to India in June when he attended the swearing-in ceremony of Prime Minister Modi and his council of ministers. The visit is poised to enhance diplomatic and economic ties, boosting collaboration in areas of mutual interest.
