Outrage in Assam: AASU’s Sivasagar Unit Boldly Protests Shocking CAA Implementation Decision

The Sivasagar unit of the All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) organized a protest on July 16, denouncing the government’s decision to halt the referral of pre-2014 immigrant cases to the Foreigners Tribunal under the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA).

Hundreds of activists and AASU members gathered, passionately chanting slogans such as “We do not accept CAA” and “Stop the process of deporting foreigners.” These demonstrations reflect the local population’s dissatisfaction with the CAA’s implementation and the state’s approach to handling cases of foreigners.

Citizenship remains a profoundly sensitive issue in Assam, a region that has long been inflamed by anti-outsider sentiments. The anti-CAA protests of 2019 tragically led to the deaths of five individuals, emphasizing the gravity of the situation.

Notably, Assam’s Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma stated on July 15 that merely eight people had applied for citizenship under the CAA in the state following the notification of the rules four months prior. He criticized anti-CAA leaders for allegedly spreading fear that the amended law would grant citizenship to up to 50 lakh illegal immigrants.

The protest by AASU underscores the ongoing tension and unresolved issues surrounding the CAA and citizenship in Assam.
