Stunning Sight! Rare 80,000-Year-Old Comet Illuminates Bengaluru Skies in Mesmerizing Pink and Yellow: See Jaw-Dropping Pictures
Bengaluru Astounded by Celestial Spectacle: Rare Comet Illuminates Skies
Residents of Bengaluru have recently been captivated by the city’s unusually vivid skies, characterized by stunning pink, green, and yellow hues. This rare celestial display prompted a flood of reactions on social media, with many initially attributing the phenomenon to natural atmospheric conditions. However, according to astrophotographers, the spectacle was actually caused by the Comet C/2023 A3 (Tsuchinshan–ATLAS), which made a brief appearance in our solar system after an astonishing 80,000-year absence.
The comet was first discovered on January 9, 2023, by the Purple Mountain Observatory in China. Its presence was confirmed a month later by the Asteroid Terrestrial-impact Last Alert System (ATLAS) in South Africa, lending part of its name to the celestial wanderer. The Hindu reported that the comet was visible in the night sky over Bengaluru on Monday, September 30.
Social media buzzed with amazement as users shared stunning images of the phenomenon. One X user marveled at the "magical" Bengaluru skies, while another drew comparisons between the illuminated scene and the Northern Lights, also known as aurora borealis.
Unlike periodic comets such as Halley’s Comet, the Tsuchinshan–ATLAS is non-periodic, making its appearances unpredictable and therefore a rare treat for astronomers and sky enthusiasts. According to the Deccan Chronicle, residents of Hyderabad also had the opportunity to witness this celestial event until Wednesday, October 2.
Astrophotographer Upendra Pinnelli stated that the comet, currently located approximately 129.6 million kilometers away from Earth in the Sextans constellation, offers a remarkable viewing experience. The inherent rarity and the breathtaking visuals associated with the comet’s appearance have undoubtedly left a lasting impression on all who were fortunate enough to observe it.
