Coimbatore Tragedy: Right Lower Limb Amputated for Thrissur ATM Heist Accused
In a critical medical intervention, a surgical team at Coimbatore Medical College Hospital (CMCH) on Monday amputated the right lower limb of K. Azru alias Mohammed Azar Ali, a 30-year-old Haryana native involved in an ATM heist in Thrissur, Kerala. Ali was injured during a counter-attack by Tamil Nadu police in Namakkal on September 27.
According to CMCH authorities, the above-knee amputation was necessitated due to vascular compromise caused by serious bullet injuries. CMCH Dean A. Nirmala explained that the main artery supplying blood to Ali’s lower limb was severely damaged, leading to muscle degradation and gangrene, which posed life-threatening risks such as septicemia and cardiac failure. Despite initial surgical repair efforts, extensive tissue damage made amputation unavoidable.
Admitted to CMCH on September 27, Ali’s statement was recorded by a magistrate at the hospital, aided by a translator, on Sunday. This significant surgical procedure was crucial to mitigate further health risks.
