Highway Flooding Sparks Protests in Dibrugarh

In Dibrugarh, members of the All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) and Dibrugarh Nari Santha took to the streets on Monday, voicing their frustration over persistent flooding of NH-37 in the Banipur area due to heavy rains. They were joined by local residents from Banipur and Bongal Gaon. The recent spell of rains has once again inundated the busy 5 km stretch from Convoy Road to Bokul, which had only dried up four days prior after a prolonged period of being submerged in knee-deep water for over 10 days during recent floods.

Protesters blamed the BJP government and the district administration for their failure to address the waterlogging that has not only disrupted daily commutes but also endangered public safety. "It’s unacceptable that a crucial highway like NH-37 continues to face recurrent waterlogging issues," said Tanuj Haloi, president of AASU (Dibrugarh). He highlighted the authorities’ negligence and demanded immediate steps to fix the drainage system to prevent further flooding.

Local residents such as Mukta Moni Hazarika from Bokul expressed concerns about the deteriorating condition of the highway, which is riddled with deep craters and potholes, exacerbated by the continuous waterlogging and causing numerous accidents. "The condition of the highway is worsening each day, turning it into a commuter’s nightmare," Hazarika said.

The protests underscored the need for urgent and effective measures to resolve the waterlogging issues to ensure the safety and convenience of the public.

In related news, cities like Delhi and Noida also experienced heavy rainfall leading to significant waterlogging and traffic disruptions. The Delhi government has issued flood control orders in anticipation of future flood-like situations, urging departments to set up relief measures and coordinate rescue operations.

This summary captures the essence of the NH-37 flooding issue in Dibrugarh, highlighting the public’s frustration and the urgent call for action by authorities to address the recurring problem.
