Supreme Court Intervenes: Urgent Hearing Tomorrow on Heart-Wrenching Kolkata Junior Doctor’s Rape and Murder Case
The Supreme Court is set to hear the suo moto case concerning the rape and murder of a junior doctor at Kolkata’s R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital. The three-judge bench, headed by Chief Justice D.Y. Chandrachud, will resume its hearing on September 30, following a postponement requested by the West Bengal government. The bench also includes Justices JB Pardiwala and Manoj Misra.
The Supreme Court raised significant concerns after learning of a state directive that restricted the employment of women doctors during night hours. This prompted the West Bengal government to assure that no policies undermining gender equality would be enforced.
Describing the incident as horrific, the Supreme Court highlighted the systemic safety issues faced by doctors nationwide. Consequently, it mandated the creation of a National Task Force to recommend measures aimed at enhancing the security of medical professionals. The court emphasized that the safety of doctors is of the “highest national concern.”
