Gaurav Gogoi: INDIA Bloc Unity at Delhi Rally Will Save Democracy
New Delhi, November 1: The Congress on Sunday presented the INDIA bloc rally at Ramlila Maidan as a display of opposition unity, with its leaders accusing the Bharatiya Janata Party of electoral malpractice and demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. The rally brought together political parties and various sections of society in what the opposition described as a collective effort to protect Indian democracy.
Addressing the press, Assam Pradesh Congress Committee president and Jorhat MP Gaurav Gogoi called the mobilisation historic. He said the INDIA bloc had not remained merely a union of political parties but had brought the entire nation together. “Students, farmers and workers are united, and together we will save India’s democracy,” he said, adding that the BJP appeared to be scared as people were gradually coming together.
Gogoi reiterated that the rally represented a broader effort to unite political parties and different sections of society. He said the opposition’s objective went beyond seeking the Chief Election Commissioner’s resignation. “The final aim is not just the resignation of Gyanesh Kumar but to strengthen the pillar of Indian democracy,” he said.
Addressing the gathering, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge accused the BJP of forming governments on a “stolen” mandate, naming the central government and the governments in Maharashtra, Bihar and Uttar Pradesh. “Be it the central government or the governments in Maharashtra, Bihar and Uttar Pradesh, they are governments formed on a stolen mandate. We have to throw out these vote thieves,” Kharge said.
Kharge also accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah of trying to shield Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. He alleged that voters from Dalit communities, young people and women had been deprived of their electoral rights. Reiterating the Congress’s demand for Kumar’s removal, Kharge said, “Democracy will survive only if Modi goes. We will save democracy only by removing Modi. Remove Modi, save democracy.”
Meanwhile, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi alleged that shops in Delhi’s Connaught Place had been forcibly shut by the BJP ahead of the rally, causing losses to local traders. In a video recorded from an open vehicle as he travelled towards the Minto Road–Connaught Place junction, Gandhi said the INDIA bloc had appealed to rally participants to shop in the area to support local businesses. “But upon reaching Connaught Place, we learned that the BJP has forcibly shut down all the shops. The country is watching how the BJP is causing loss to the shopkeepers,” he said.
