Apple iPhone Duo Launch: Limited Walk-In Stock — Act Fast!
Apple said Wednesday that only a “limited” number of its new folding iPhone Duo will be available for walk-in customers when the device launches in stores on Friday, after initial online orders sold out within minutes and pushed delivery times for some buyers to January.
The announcement comes just days before the retail debut of Apple’s first foldable phone, which the company unveiled in September. Analysts had expected the device to quickly dominate a niche segment where rivals such as Samsung Electronics and Huawei Technologies have sold premium foldable offerings for years.
However, the iPhone Duo is a more complex product than Apple’s standard candy-bar iPhones. Its tight-fitting hinge, analysts believe, may take time for the company to learn to manufacture in high volumes, potentially constraining early supply.
In a statement, Apple sought to reassure prospective buyers that its stores would be stocked, though modestly. “On Friday morning, our teams look forward to welcoming customers at Apple Stores to experience iPhone Duo and the incredible iPhone line-up for themselves,” the company said. “Apple Stores will have limited iPhone Duo available for walk-in customers, and we’re working hard to get this revolutionary new product into customers’ hands as quickly as possible.”
Availability will vary significantly by country, according to Apple. Customers in the United States, Australia, Canada, Mexico and much of the UK and Europe will be able to pick up online orders in stores or make limited walk-in purchases.
In other regions, however, the iPhone Duo will be reserved exclusively for customers who have already bought the device online. That list includes mainland China, France, Hong Kong, India, Japan, Malaysia, South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand and the UAE, Apple said.
Macau, the China-governed island, presents a distinct case: the iPhone Duo there will be available to walk-in customers only, with limited inventory.
The tight supply underscores both the intense demand for Apple’s long-awaited entry into the foldable market and the manufacturing challenges the company faces in scaling production of its most hardware-intricate iPhone to date, leaving many early hopefuls facing a wait that stretches into the new year.
