When Founders Fall: The Attention Economy of Tech’s Reckoning Era

By Sanjeev Sarma

In Technology, Trust Is Not a Story. It Is an Architecture.

We often assume that better technology wins because it works better. In reality, technology succeeds-or fails-on a more demanding condition: whether people can trust what they are being told about it.

The strong opening of You Can See Everything, a documentary about Elizabeth Holmes and Theranos, signals more than audience interest in a familiar Silicon Valley story. The filmmakers reportedly had extensive access to Holmes and her family before she went to prison, while the film’s critical reception and packed screenings have renewed public attention on how ambition, reputation and evidence collide in technology.

The important lesson is not about one founder or one film. It is about the distance that can open up between a compelling promise and a system that has been independently proven to work.

When confidence outruns verification

In technology, a persuasive narrative is useful. It helps attract talent, customers, investors and partners around a difficult problem. But narrative becomes dangerous when it starts doing the work of evidence.

This risk is especially acute in sectors where a product’s claims affect health, finance, public services or safety. In those environments, a polished demonstration is not validation. A founder’s conviction is not a substitute for repeatable results. And a successful fundraising round says little about whether the underlying system performs reliably in real-world conditions.

As architects, we are trained to ask less glamorous questions: What happens when inputs are messy? Can the result be reproduced? Is the data traceable? Who can independently verify the output? What happens when the system fails?

These are not merely engineering details. They are the foundations of trust.

Build for scrutiny, not just scale

For technology leaders, the practical implication is clear: trustworthy systems must be designed to withstand scrutiny from the beginning-not retrofitted with explanations after confidence has been lost.

That means creating clear data provenance, independent testing, meaningful audit trails and defined escalation paths. It also means separating the people who build a system from those responsible for validating its most consequential claims. In enterprise architecture, this may add time and cost. But skipping these controls creates a different kind of technical debt: one measured in regulatory exposure, damaged credibility and decisions made on unreliable outputs.

The same principle applies to generative AI. A fluent answer can create the impression of certainty even when the underlying result is incomplete or wrong. The question for an organisation is not simply whether a model can produce an impressive demo. It is whether teams can identify its limits, trace important decisions and intervene when those limits matter.

Speed matters. So does stability. But in high-stakes systems, verifiability is what makes either one sustainable.

A leadership test for the next wave

The story around Theranos continues to resonate because it exposes a tension that is never confined to one company: how do we distinguish genuine innovation from confidence without sufficient proof?

For CTOs, founders and researchers, a useful test is to ask whether the organisation welcomes hard questions before a crisis forces them. Can a team publish what its system cannot do? Are concerns allowed to move upward without being softened? Does the architecture preserve enough evidence to reconstruct how an important decision was reached?

A healthy technology culture does not treat scrutiny as hostility. It treats scrutiny as part of the product.

The bigger lesson for emerging entrepreneurs and students is that credibility is built through disciplined verification, not just bold vision. Ambition may open doors, but the quality of the evidence determines whether trust can endure.

Technology’s most important feature may not be what it promises. It may be how clearly it can show its work.
