Tragedy in Gwalior: 13 Dead, Nearly 40 Hurt as Truck Rams Devotees Near Temple
Thirteen people were killed and nearly 40 others injured after a truck loaded with paddy rammed into devotees waiting near a temple in Madhya Pradesh’s Gwalior in the early hours of Sunday, October 18, police said.
The deadly road accident took place around 1:30 am on Sheetlamata Mandir Road, where devotees had gathered and were waiting along the roadside. Officials said the driver lost control of the paddy-laden truck, which struck people standing and sitting by the road before crashing into the wall of the temple.
“Thirteen persons were killed near the Sheetlamata Mandir when an uncontrolled truck loaded with paddy hit devotees waiting on the roadside,” Gwalior Superintendent of Police Dharamvir Yadav told PTI.
Nearly 40 people sustained injuries in the crash, with four to five of them reported to be in a serious condition, the senior police official said.
Rescue operations were underway at the accident site under the supervision of senior police and administrative officials, as teams worked to respond to one of the worst road tragedies to hit the city in recent times.
