Protesters March to Reclaim Jantar Mantar as Official Protest Site
Protesters took to the streets of New Delhi on Saturday, organising a ‘Reclaim Jantar Mantar’ march to demand that the iconic location be restored as an officially designated site for demonstrations. The march came days after the Union government de-notified the landmark for protests on October 12, ending its long-standing status as the capital’s primary protest hub.
Several protesters were detained by the Delhi Police during the march, as demonstrators attempted to make their way to the historic site.
Following the de-notification, the authorities have designated three alternative venues for holding protests in the city — Ramlila Ground, Burari Ground and the Central Business District (CBD) Ground in East Delhi.
Carrying banners and raising slogans, the demonstrators insisted that Jantar Mantar be redesignated as the official protest site, arguing that the change represented a setback to the right to peaceful dissent in the national capital.
The marchers also directed their anger at the Election Commission of India (ECI), raising slogans against the poll body and calling for the withdrawal of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process of electoral rolls.
Addressing the gathering’s grievances, one protester told IANS, “We want to convey that ever since the sit-in protest against Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar started on October 2, the Union government has been continuously detaining people who step out onto the streets and try to reach Jantar Mantar. Attempts are being made to brutally detain them, and women are being mistreated. We are not going to tolerate this.”
The detentions and the government’s decision to shift designated protest sites to locations on the city’s periphery have sharpened tensions between demonstrators and the authorities, with protesters vowing to continue their push for the restoration of Jantar Mantar as the recognised venue for public demonstrations.
