Assam: Gold Jewellery, Cash Looted from Cachar House on Saptami
Thieves allegedly decamped with gold jewellery and cash from a locked house at Dighar Phulertol Part I, near Chiripul, under Lakhipur police station in Assam’s Cachar district, on the evening of Saptami on October 17, while the family was away at a nearby Durga Puja pandal.
The house belonged to Nityaranjan Das. According to the family, they had locked the premises before leaving to visit a Durga Puja pandal close to their home. The intruders are believed to have slipped in through a kitchen ventilator, broken open a cupboard and fled with the valuables stashed inside.
The theft came to light when the family returned home and found their belongings scattered across the rooms. They promptly alerted the authorities, following which personnel from Lakhipur police station reached the spot and began an investigation into the incident. No arrests had been reported at the time of filing this report.
The burglary has sparked concern among residents of the area, who allege that thefts recur in the locality every year during the Durga Puja festivities, when many households remain locked as families spend their evenings at pandals. The affected family has urged Minister Kaushik Rai and the Lakhipur police to take concrete steps to prevent such incidents and to ensure the safety of homes in the area during the festival season.
