Dispur Police arrested eight people on suspicion of assaulting a woman at The Locals Bar Cum Restaurant in Khanapara, Guwahati, during the overnight hours of October 2-3. The incident occurred at around 2.30 am, and a video of the alleged attack subsequently went viral on social media. The woman, who sustained multiple injuries, is now in a stable condition.
The arrested individuals are bar manager Justin D Areng, 28; event manager Nikebur Zaman Sarkar, 30, also known as Nikebur Zaman Sardar and Roman; front-office executive Jhumpa Sinha, 23; Usha Devi, 22; Manju Das, 26; Gourav Mahanta, 21; and Dino Sona, 21. Police have not disclosed the identity of the eighth suspect.
According to Dispur Police, officers registered a case on their own initiative under sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, including those relating to attempted murder, after the video surfaced online. CCTV footage reviewed during the inquiry reportedly showed the woman being assaulted inside the bar before she was dragged by her hair and clothing to the basement, where she was allegedly attacked again.
Several of those arrested are associated with the bar’s management or staff. Police also found that the establishment was operating beyond its permitted closing time of 12.30 am and that its management had failed to inform the local police station about the incident.
Dispur Police Station officer-in-charge Bhaskar Malla Patowary said the bar could be closed if substantial evidence showed that it had remained open beyond its permitted hours. The establishment has been operating for about one year.
According to sources, the incident followed an altercation in which the woman allegedly struck a bar employee with a beer bottle. Police are examining the sequence of events, the roles of those involved, the alleged assault, the venue’s operating hours and any other possible violations. Further investigation is underway.
