Tripura University Celebrates 40th Foundation Day: ₹1,589-Crore Plan
Tripura University marked its 40th Foundation Day on Friday in Agartala, unveiling a proposed Rs 1,589 crore development plan focused on research, innovation, job-oriented education and stronger academic-industry partnerships. Chief Minister Manik Saha said education, research and innovation would be crucial to Tripura’s development and called for greater opportunities for young people to contribute to the state and the country.
The investment plan seeks to upgrade infrastructure, research facilities and academic programmes as the university enters its fifth decade. Vice-Chancellor Debabrata Das said the institution aimed to build an ecosystem that equips students with relevant skills while giving researchers broader opportunities to collaborate, innovate and apply their work. He also sought sustained support from the Tripura government to help the university pursue its goal of becoming a world-class institution.
Tripura University reported publishing nearly 1,500 research papers over the past five years, averaging about 300 annually. It also cited 75 papers meeting international standards and 25 patents as part of its research output.
As part of the anniversary, the university proposed five memoranda of understanding with academic, research and civil-society organisations. Academic and research collaborations are planned with Assam University and Devi Ahilya Vishwavidyalaya in Indore. The other proposed agreements involve the North East Financial Inclusion Trust, the Institute of Cost Accountants of India and the Pahle India Foundation. The institutions said the proposals could support joint academic programmes, research, skill development and institutional exchanges, subject to agreed terms.
Bandhan Group chairman Chandra Shekhar Ghosh announced Rs 10 crore in financial assistance for the university’s development and pledged support for future projects. The university also plans to work with six villages to connect academic research and knowledge with local needs and social concerns.
Higher Education Minister Kishor Barman said the anniversary represented the contributions of generations of students, teachers and researchers rather than merely a numerical milestone. The celebrations included a flag-hoisting ceremony, the presentation of awards and a programme at Agartala’s City Centre marking Gandhi Jayanti.
The proposed projects and partnerships remain subject to implementation. Their success will depend on whether they produce tangible improvements in education, employment, research and community engagement.
