Polling is underway in Silchar’s first municipal corporation election, with about 270,000 voters eligible to cast their ballots across 40 wards on Saturday, October 3, following the town’s upgrade from a municipal board.
The Silchar Municipal Corporation comprises 42 wards. BJP candidates were elected unopposed in two wards, while voting is being held in the remaining 40. A total of 131 candidates are contesting across these wards, with polling conducted at 303 stations throughout the corporation area.
The district administration has made arrangements to ensure smooth voting and has introduced additional measures to maintain law and order and prevent disruptions. The election marks a significant civic milestone for Silchar, as residents elect representatives to the newly constituted municipal corporation for the first time.
