Governor Chairs NIT Council Meeting: Key Decisions and Next Steps
Governor Om Prakash Mathur chaired a meeting of the Executive Board and General Council of the Namgyal Institute of Tibetology (NIT), Deorali, on Thursday at the Lok Bhavan conference hall in Gangtok. The meeting reviewed the institute’s budget, infrastructure development and construction activities, including the Drejong Namgyal Sowa Rigpa Hospital, while focusing on the preservation and promotion of regional heritage.
The meeting was attended by Sonam Lama, Minister for Ecclesiastical Affairs and NIT Vice-Chairman; Jitendra Singh Raje, Commissioner-cum-Secretary of Lok Bhavan; Basant Kumar Lama, Secretary of the Culture Department; Kincho Doma, Secretary of the Ecclesiastical Affairs Department; Suchitra Rasaily, Secretary of the AYUSH Department; Revenue Secretary Rajendra Sharma; a Deputy Secretary from the Ministry of AYUSH, Government of India; NIT Director Dr. Passang D. Phempu; and senior officials from NIT and the AYUSH Department.
Raje welcomed the participants and provided an overview of NIT Deorali, describing it as an important institution for preserving and researching Buddhist and Tibetan history, culture and philosophy. Dr. Phempu presented a detailed overview of the institute’s functioning, including its governance structure, regulatory framework and operations. The presentation covered the roles of the General Council, Executive Board and Financial Committee.
The council discussed the institute’s budget, infrastructure plans, construction works and the Drejong Namgyal Sowa Rigpa Hospital, along with other key matters. Governor Mathur reviewed the institute’s progress and called for stronger research programmes to document the region’s history, languages, culture and traditions. He also urged officials to expand centrally sponsored schemes, ensure that government welfare benefits reach all sections of society, and connect the institute’s work more closely with public interest.
