Army, BSF Strategic Seminar Boosts Border Coordination in Shillong
The Indian Army and the Border Security Force (BSF) held the “Army-BSF Synergy Seminar 2026” in Shillong on September 30 to improve operational coordination and border security along the India-Bangladesh frontier. Hosted by the 101 Area of the Army’s Eastern Command, the seminar brought together senior BSF officers from the Meghalaya, Guwahati, Mizoram, Cachar and Tripura Frontiers. The exercise focused on intelligence-sharing, joint planning and an integrated approach to managing the border, particularly where military installations and assets are located nearby.
The BSF oversees the 4,096-km India-Bangladesh border, including 856 km in Tripura, 443 km in Meghalaya, 318 km in Mizoram and 262 km in Assam. The remaining 2,217 km is managed by the South Bengal and North Bengal Frontiers in West Bengal.
Managing the frontier is challenging because it passes through riverine, forested and hilly terrain. According to the Ministry of Home Affairs, 3,232.2 km of the border has been fenced. However, authorities have found little scope to fence a further 174.5 km containing water bodies, marshes and dense forests.
The BSF relies on intensive patrolling and advanced surveillance technology to detect criminal activity and illegal immigration. Although the Army does not directly manage the international border, several of its installations and assets in the northeast lie close to it, making regular coordination essential. An official said, “Regular sharing of intelligence is key to effective border management.”
Espionage and sabotage remain major concerns for both forces. The official said the border’s difficult terrain, linguistic and cultural similarities with Bangladesh, and history of use by hostile actors had increased security challenges. The border has also reportedly been used by foreign agencies to collect intelligence on Indian military assets and movements in the northeast.
The 101 Area supports combat logistics and the operational maintenance of Army units in the region and maintains strict confidentiality over movement details. According to an Eastern Command post on X, the seminar sought to enhance operational coordination, strengthen joint synergy, improve information-sharing and promote a more integrated approach to border management.
