The death of a 49-year-old man injured in an attack by unidentified gunmen at Kalenjang village in Manipur’s Senapati district has raised the fatalities to three. Asiho Sani died from his injuries at a private hospital in Senapati around 3 am on Sunday, nearly 12 hours after two Naga civilians were shot inside the village chief’s residence.
The firing occurred between 2.30 pm and 3 pm on Saturday. The two men killed at the scene were identified as Rocky Mao of Chowainamei village and Kumar Poumai of Laii Shirafii village. Another injured man, Adani Manio, 33, was also taken to a private hospital. Sani’s body was subsequently sent to Senapati district hospital for autopsy.
Naga youths held a condolence service in Senapati on Sunday as concerns grew over possible further attacks on Naga civilians. The incident came about 48 hours after four Tangkhul Naga civilians were shot dead at Pilong village in the neighboring Kamjong district, near the Myanmar border. They were allegedly killed by suspected Myanmar-based Kuki militants.
Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh condemned the Senapati attack, calling it “a cowardly act of violence against innocent lives.” Deputy Chief Minister Nemcha Kipgen demanded a thorough investigation and said those responsible must be brought to justice. She also urged communities not to allow the tragedy to trigger further violence or hostility.
The attacks have intensified concerns over Naga-Kuki tensions, which grew in February amid renewed ethnic strife following the violence between Kuki and Meitei communities that erupted in May 2023.
