Pakistan Checkpoint Bombing: 11 Killed, 30 Injured by Suicide Bomber
At least 11 people were killed and 30 others wounded on Saturday when a suicide bomber detonated an explosives-laden vehicle at a roadside police checkpoint in Dera Ismail Khan, a district in Pakistan’s northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, police and rescue officials said.
Two officials from the customs and excise department were among those killed. Police deployed bomb-disposal teams to examine the scene and determine the type of explosives used. The victims were taken to a nearby hospital, where several of the injured remain in critical condition.
Rescue personnel from the Darazinda station provided medical assistance and transported wounded people to the hospital. The Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan, also known as the Pakistani Taliban, later claimed responsibility for the attack. The group is separate from, but allied with, the Afghan Taliban, which returned to power in Afghanistan in 2021.
The bombing came amid a series of security incidents in Dera Ismail Khan during September, including previous attacks linked to the Pakistani Taliban.
It also followed a similar suicide bombing one week earlier in Kohat, another Khyber Pakhtunkhwa district bordering Afghanistan. That attack killed 21 people and injured 78 after an explosives-laden vehicle was rammed into a mosque near police offices. Fifteen police officers were among the dead, while the mosque was badly damaged and an outer wall of the police complex collapsed.
