Fadnavis Orders Swift Rescue: 404 Maha Citizens Safe, 338 Contacted

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said on August 29 that state agencies are working round the clock to assist and evacuate tourists and residents from Maharashtra who are stranded in Nepal after severe flooding. Fadnavis has ordered heightened vigilance and coordinated travel logistics to ensure the safe return of all affected individuals. The Mantralaya’s 24/7 Disaster Management Control Room has activated helplines and is coordinating relief and transport. Current official figures show 404 Maharashtra citizens verified safe and 338 successfully contacted.

Officials said 41 people returned from Nepal’s Saga on August 29, while 106 citizens were scheduled to arrive in Nagpur at 4:30 a.m. on August 30. Nearly 143 residents are reported to be en route to the state. A group of 106 individuals from Nagpur began their journey home via Bihar on August 29, according to the government statement.

A separate group of 45 tourists from Nashik, Pune, Mumbai and Ahilyanagar, who had travelled to Nepal through a Sangamner-based tour operator and were in Chitwan when the floods hit, have safely re-entered India. Because roads toward Kathmandu were closed, the group was rerouted through Lumbini in Nepal and was expected to reach Ayodhya on August 29. Further travel arrangements will follow state directives.

Under the direction of Disaster Management Minister Girish Mahajan, the state government is working with the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) to provide assistance. The MEA released a list late on August 28 of 149 Indian tourists who had safely entered Nepal from China. State officials have been instructed to verify and compile district-wise details of residents to streamline their return.

Authorities are still tracking eight tourists from Borivali and Andheri reported to be stranded in Nepal; attempts to reach Laxminarayan Acharya (Andheri) and others have been hampered by mobile-network disruptions. Officials say they remain in active communication with relatives in Mumbai while continuing rescue and contact efforts. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation’s Emergency Operations Centre (BMC EOC) reported no distress calls from Mumbai City or Mumbai Suburban districts as of this update.
