CM to Inaugurate Landmark Bharat Mata Canteen‑cum‑Shelter House Today
Agartala, August 19, 2026 — The Bharat Mata Canteen-cum-Shelter House is scheduled to be inaugurated today by Chief Minister Prof. (Dr.) Manik Saha in Agartala, offering temporary accommodation and essential support to family members of patients undergoing treatment at Govind Ballabh Pant (GBP) Hospital and the Atal Bihari Vajpayee Regional Cancer Hospital. The facility aims to ease the burden on families who face difficulty arranging lodging while accompanying patients for prolonged care.
Built at an estimated cost of Rs 5 crore, the shelter combines canteen and lodging services to provide a safe, convenient place to stay for visitors, particularly those from distant parts of the state. Officials say the initiative is intended to reduce financial and logistical strain on economically weaker families during medical emergencies and extended treatment periods.
Ahead of the inauguration, Secretary of Urban Development Milind Ramteke and State Mission Director of the Tripura Urban Livelihoods Mission, Tarit Kanti Chakma, visited the site to review arrangements and assess the readiness of the facility. Their inspection focused on final preparations to ensure the shelter can open smoothly and serve patients’ relatives without disruption.
Authorities describe the Bharat Mata Canteen-cum-Shelter House as an important step toward strengthening patient-support infrastructure in Agartala. By providing reliable accommodation and basic services close to major hospitals, the project is expected to improve dignity and convenience for families navigating complex medical journeys.
