Tripura CM Rushes Completion of First Intl Cricket Stadium, Seeks BCCI
Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha on Sunday, August 16, 2026 inspected the ongoing construction of the state’s first international cricket stadium at Narsingarh and directed authorities and contractors to finish the remaining work at the earliest, saying the venue could host an international match in 2027.
During the site visit, Saha said he had already discussed the possibility of staging an international-level match at the stadium with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). “I have already had a conversation with the BCCI regarding holding a cricket match at this venue,” he said, expressing hope that Tripura could welcome international cricket next year.
The Chief Minister acknowledged that the ambitious project had suffered repeated delays. “I have been waiting for a long time for the completion of Tripura’s first international cricket stadium. At different times, the work was stopped for various reasons. I had called the contractors and discussed the matter with them,” he said, urging contractors to expedite progress.
Agencies involved in construction told officials that major works are expected to be completed within the next one-and-a-half months, with some additional works taking another two months. If timelines hold, substantial completion would likely come by early October 2026, with final works wrapping up by early December 2026.
Saha directed officials to speed up work, stressing the importance of bringing international cricket to Tripura for local fans, young players and sports enthusiasts. “I have asked them to complete the work as soon as possible because international cricket needs to be played here for the people of Tripura, especially cricket enthusiasts and players,” he said.
A former president of the Tripura Cricket Association, the Chief Minister noted the stadium’s seating capacity of about 22,000 and said it was being developed to international standards. He also asked officials to pay special attention to pitch preparation and to maintain regular contact with the BCCI as plans to host an international match advance.
Saha reiterated his hope that the completed stadium would pave the way for an international-level match in 2027, calling the project a significant milestone in Tripura’s sporting infrastructure and future development.
