Agartala, August 17, 2026 — A drug de-addiction awareness camp was held at Maharaja Bir Bikram University on Monday, organized by the university’s NSS Unit and Red Ribbon Club in collaboration with Prajapita Brahma Kumaris Ishwariya Vishwa Vidyalaya and the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment. University Vice-Chancellor Professor Bibhas Deb and Registrar Dr. Sumanta Chakraborty attended the event, which drew students, faculty and university officials.

Dr. Bindu Ranjan Chakma, Associate Professor and IQAC Coordinator, opened the programme with a welcome address. Representatives of the Brahma Kumaris present included Mamta Behenji, Smriti Behenji, Dr. Jyotishwar Sen Bhaiji, Sujit Bhaiji and Deepak Acharya Bhaiji. Smriti Behenji outlined the organisation’s educational and social initiatives, while Dr. Jyotishwar Sen Bhaiji discussed the harmful effects of substance abuse and advocated meditation as a tool for recovery.

Following the talks, Mamta Behenji led a meditation session attended by students, faculty members and university officials. Participants later took a pledge against drug use as part of the Brahma Kumaris’ Ten Crore Drug-Free Pledges campaign, an initiative aimed at broad-based community commitment to drug avoidance.

Registrar Dr. Sumanta Chakraborty emphasised the university’s efforts to raise awareness about drug abuse and voiced concern about a rising trend in injectable narcotic use among young people and its links to diseases such as HIV/AIDS. He called for social reintegration of those affected by addiction and HIV/AIDS and urged collective action from institutions and the community.

Vice-Chancellor Professor Bibhas Deb said education must extend beyond textbooks to build awareness of drugs’ dangers, calling for regular dialogue and policy measures to address the underlying drivers of youth addiction. He also noted the achievements of the Government of India’s Nasha Mukt Bharat campaign and expressed appreciation for the Ten Crore Drug-Free Pledges initiative. Dr. Debdatta Adak, Assistant Professor and NSS Programme Officer, delivered the vote of thanks.
