Assam’s Kaliabor Faces Power Crisis: Transformer Out for 3 Months
A 25 kVA transformer installed by the Assam Power Distribution Company Limited (APDCL) in Kaliabor has remained non-functional for nearly three months, residents of Bamuni Pathar and Bamuni Gaon alleged, leaving the two villages to continue suffering persistent low-voltage problems despite the new equipment. The transformer was set up after an initiative by the local MLA to address long-standing voltage complaints, but villagers say it has not been commissioned or energised since installation.
Transformers convert and regulate voltage to supply homes and businesses; a 25 kVA unit is intended to improve local voltage stability and meet modest additional demand. Locals say they expected the new transformer to resolve frequent drops and fluctuations that have affected appliances and daily routines, but those benefits have not materialised because the unit remains unused.
Residents blamed what they described as a lackadaisical attitude by APDCL and the contractor responsible for the installation, alleging delays in final wiring, testing or formal commissioning. As a result, people in both Bamuni Pathar and Bamuni Gaon continue to face electricity-related problems and have seen no improvement in supply since the transformer was placed.
The continued inaction has increased frustration among villagers, who say the delay compounds existing hardships and undermines confidence in authorities’ ability to deliver promised infrastructure improvements. Locals have urged APDCL and the contractor to take immediate steps to make the transformer operational and ensure a reliable power supply to the affected areas.
