Shock: Asish Banerjee Dead at TMC Office; Suicide Note Recovered
Former West Bengal Assembly Deputy Speaker and Trinamool Congress leader Asish Banerjee was found dead at his party office in Rampurhat, Birbhum, on August 16, police said. Officers reported he was discovered hanging inside the office and that a suicide note was recovered at the scene; according to a police officer, the note stated, “no one is responsible for my death.”
Banerjee’s body was taken to Rampurhat Medical College and Hospital for a post-mortem examination, authorities said. Local police have said investigations are underway and further details will be released as the probe progresses.
News of his death drew dozens of Trinamool Congress workers and supporters to the party office and Banerjee’s residence in Rampurhat. Bolpur MP Asit Kumar Mal and Rajya Sabha MP Samirul Islam visited Rampurhat Medical College and Hospital following the reports.
A five-term MLA from the Rampurhat constituency, Banerjee had stepped down as chairman of the TMC’s Birbhum district core committee in June, shortly after the party’s defeat in the West Bengal Assembly elections. He also lost the Rampurhat seat in that poll to BJP candidate Dhruba Saha.
A professor at Rampurhat College by profession, Banerjee served in the West Bengal government in several portfolios, including AYUSH and Agriculture, and later held the post of Deputy Speaker of the state Assembly during the Trinamool Congress’s tenure. Further official statements on the circumstances of his death are awaited.
