Dima Hasao SI Death: Five Held as Probe Uncovers Drug Link
The probe into the death of Sub‑Inspector Nabajit Das, in‑charge of the Laisong police outpost in Assam’s Dima Hasao district, has taken a new turn after police arrested five people, including an alleged wholesale drug dealer from Juria. Das was killed after being struck by a vehicle while on duty during a night naka‑checking (road checkpoint) operation; the incident was first treated as a road accident but investigators now say he may have been deliberately targeted.
Police operations following the incident led to the arrest of Selim Uddin, who has been identified as the main accused. Sources describe Uddin as an alleged wholesale drug dealer and the alleged mastermind of a drug network operating in Juria. Four others have also been detained in connection with the case: Uddin’s brother Mohidul Islam, his father Abdul Kuddus Farazi, and associates Muffazzol Islam of Juria’s Boriguri area and Ruksana Khatun, alias Pinki, of Juria’s Kadamoni Pathar.
Investigators are examining whether the alleged drug network was behind the incident and whether Das was targeted while carrying out the naka‑checking to avoid police action. The arrested individuals remain in police custody as inquiries continue.
Das’s death has prompted demands from several organisations for strict action against those responsible and for the entire alleged drug network to be brought to justice, underscoring concerns about law enforcement safety and the reach of organised narcotics activity in the area.
