Bangladesh’s Landmark First Test Victory on Australian Soil
Bangladesh produced a landmark Test victory in Darwin, defeating Australia by nine wickets to take a 1-0 lead in the two-match series. Chasing a modest target of 57, Bangladesh reached the total in 14.2 overs with the loss of just one wicket, Mominul Haque finishing unbeaten on 30 and Shadman Islam 25 not out, Mominul hitting the boundary that sealed the win.
Australia, having elected to bat first, were dismissed for 198 with Steve Smith top-scoring on 71 from 109 balls. Hasan Mahmud tore through the Australian order with a six-wicket haul, while Taskin Ahmed added two scalps. Bangladesh then seized control by posting 426 in their first innings, a total built around Tanzid Hasan’s 101 — the first Test century by a Bangladeshi batter on Australian soil — Najmul Hossain Shanto’s 84 and Mehidy Hasan Miraz’s 65.
In reply, Australia showed fight in their second innings, led by Cameron Green’s century (104), but the hosts were bowled out for 284. Mehidy Hasan Miraz again played a key role with the ball as Bangladesh’s attack prevented Australia from establishing a decisive lead.
The result ends a long wait for Bangladesh’s first Test win in Australia and hands them a chance to clinch a historic series victory when the second Test begins in Mackay on August 22. A series triumph in Australia would place Bangladesh among a very small group of Asian sides to have won a Test series there; India accomplished the feat in 2018–19 under Virat Kohli and again in 2020–21 under Ajinkya Rahane.
