Revolutionary Tea Auction in Dibrugarh Cuts Delays, Costs
Dibrugarh, August 14 — Assam Chai Bazaar, a new public tea auction platform, went live on Thursday with the launch of its website, www.assamchaibazaar.com, at a function held at the Gymkhana Club. The platform is billed as an online facility to help tea producers sell more quickly and cut transaction costs.
The site was inaugurated in the presence of Prashanta Borah, factory advisory officer of the Tea Board of India. The Tea Board recently granted a licence to Assam Chai Bazaar LLP to operate the public auction platform in Upper Assam.
Among the promoters is Chand Kumar Gohain, president of the Assam Bought Leaf Tea Manufacturers’ Association (ABLTMA). Other partners named by the venture are Deven Singh, Gautam Beria, Chandrajit Baruah and Sumit Agarwalla, all described as leading bought-leaf tea manufacturers.
Promoters say the platform is designed to speed up the auction cycle so sellers can complete the entire transaction within 25 days: tea sold within 12 days and payments cleared in the following 13 days. Sumit Agarwalla said producers have long pressed for quicker sales and noted that the Tea Board had set up several committees to explore ways to shorten the process, adding that “time is of the essence.”
To support operations, the promoters have arranged two warehouses in Dibrugarh with a combined area of about 40,000 square feet, plus a 5,000-square-foot facility in Guwahati. They estimate that tea-producing areas within a roughly 120 km radius — including adjoining districts and parts of Arunachal Pradesh — account for nearly 55% of Assam’s tea output.
The promoters said the Assam Chai Bazaar platform is expected to give tea producers a more efficient, accessible route to market while reducing delays and associated transaction costs.
