Two days before Independence Day, on Friday morning, militants opened fire on an Assam Rifles post in Longvi village under Nampong police station in Changlang district, Arunachal Pradesh, security sources said. The attackers fired from across the India–Myanmar border, and Assam Rifles personnel returned fire; officials reported no casualties.
Longvi is a remote, border-facing village in the Jayrampur–Nampong area close to the international boundary with Myanmar. According to security officials, the assault involved indiscriminate shooting at the post, which forced troops on duty to respond to the incoming fire. The exchange of gunfire alarmed residents and raised tensions in the locality.
Investigators suspect the involvement of either ALFA-Swadhin or NSCN-KY, both of which had previously called for a boycott of Independence Day celebrations, security sources said. Assam Rifles camps in the region have been targeted by militant groups in the past, officials added, underlining the vulnerability of forward posts in this rugged border belt.
A search-and-sweep operation has been launched to track down the attackers, and security forces have stepped up surveillance around the post and in surrounding areas. Local commanders say monitoring has been intensified to prevent further incidents and to secure the border-facing communities ahead of national observances.
