Defence Ministry Clears Rs 1,577 Cr Loiter Munition Deal for Army
New Delhi — On Friday, August 14, 2026, the Ministry of Defence announced it has signed contracts worth approximately Rs 1,577 crore with Tata Advanced Systems Limited and NIBE Private Limited to procure Loiter Munition Systems, together with munitions and accessories, for the Indian Army. The procurement is intended to strengthen the combat capability and readiness of the Army’s artillery regiments.
The ministry said the Loiter Munition System is a battlefield asset designed to improve precision-strike capabilities. The system can search for, track and engage targets with greater accuracy, boosting the effectiveness of artillery operations and reducing collateral damage.
“The Loiter Munition System is a critical equipment developed to enhance the capability of the Artillery Regiments, thereby strengthening the overall operational effectiveness of the Indian Army,” the ministry stated. Officials described the acquisition as a priority for quickly equipping frontline units with modern, precision weapons.
The purchase has been made under the Buy (Indian) category through the Fast Track Procedure, reflecting a push to accelerate indigenous defence manufacturing. The ministry said the contracts will expand domestic production capacity and support the government’s Aatmanirbhar Bharat objective by encouraging development and manufacture of advanced defence technologies within India.
By combining rapid procurement with local industry participation, the deal aims to deliver capability gains to the Army while nurturing the domestic defence ecosystem. The contracts mark another step in sourcing modern precision systems from Indian industry to meet evolving operational requirements.
