Congress Demands Urgent Probe into Nazira Flood Relief Gaps
Guwahati, Aug 13 — Former Assam Leader of the Opposition and Congress leader Debabrata Saikia has written to Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma seeking intervention over alleged irregularities in flood relief distribution in Nazira and adjoining areas, saying numerous genuinely affected families were excluded from beneficiary lists.
In the letter, written in Assamese and sent on Thursday, Saikia accused local authorities of preparing and approving relief lists on a “partisan basis,” leaving out deserving households in Sintak Bormising, N-Kapahua, Khatkhati Gaon Panchayat and other parts of Nazira. He urged immediate corrective action to ensure aid reaches the intended recipients.
“Several families whose houses were completely submerged or severely damaged during the floods had yet to receive relief,” the letter stated, a line Saikia quoted from complaints he received. Residents of Khatkhati Gaon Panchayat, he said, alleged that the panchayat president had not acted impartially and that beneficiary lists had been drawn up selectively.
Saikia highlighted two specific cases to illustrate gaps in relief and emergency response. He cited the death of Gyanjit Barua on July 20, saying Barua’s wife, Chandraprabha Barua, alleged no vehicle was available to take him to hospital for dialysis during the floods. According to Saikia’s letter, the family contacted the 108 emergency number, the local Nazira police station and the gaonburha, but help did not arrive in time.
Terming the incident a “serious failure” of emergency response, Saikia demanded Rs 9 lakh in compensation for the Barua family from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund, and asked that the death be recognised as flood-related.
He also quoted Moni Borgohain of N-Kapahua, who alleged that the locality had been inundated yet no family had received the announced Rs 15,000 relief. “Not a single family in the area has received the announced Rs 15,000 relief,” Saikia wrote, relaying local grievances.
Saikia called on the Chief Minister to ensure relief reaches affected families across Sintak Bormising, N-Kapahua, Khatkhati Gaon Panchayat and other areas, and sought an impartial inquiry into beneficiary selection, relief distribution and the conduct of emergency services to address the alleged lapses.
