Several institutional and educational developments were reported from Shillong on July 29, as a delegation of children from the Meghalaya Hindu Mission Children Home met Governor C.H. Vijayashankar, NIFT Shillong kicked off a three-day orientation for new students, the office of South Shillong MLA Sanbor Shullai invited applications for the 23rd Meritorious Award for Students 2026, and the University of Science & Technology Meghalaya (USTM) received UGC recognition under Section 12(B) of the UGC Act, 1956.
A 26-member delegation from the Meghalaya Hindu Mission Children Home called on Governor C.H. Vijayashankar at Lok Bhavan to seek his blessings ahead of the institution’s centenary celebrations in October 2026. The children were accompanied by Assistant In-charge Advocate R. Paul, case worker Anita Deb, warden Shekar Mech and teacher K.B. Prasad Pandey; Additional Chief Secretary to the Governor H.C. Chaudhary was also present. During the meeting the Governor spoke with the children about their education and aspirations, urged them to pursue their goals with determination, and commended the Mission-established in 1926-for its long-standing commitment to providing care and shelter to vulnerable children. The interaction ended with the Governor extending his best wishes for the children’s future and a commemorative group photograph.
At the National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT), Shillong, authorities began a three-day orientation programme for newly admitted students from across India designed to familiarise them with the institute’s academic framework and career pathways in design, management and technology. Anil Kariwala, founder and CEO of Kariwala Industries Ltd., was the chief guest at the inaugural session, with Dr. Ravi Shankar Bhakat of IIM Shillong as guest of honour. Kariwala urged students to look beyond classroom learning, embrace emerging technologies and continuously upgrade skills to meet global fashion and textile industry demands. He stressed innovation, sustainability and collaboration, advising students to “think globally while remaining rooted in India’s rich cultural heritage,” and to ground creative work in understanding people, purpose and responsibility.
The office of South Shillong MLA Sanbor Shullai has invited applications for the 23rd Meritorious Award for Students 2026 to recognise academic achievers from the 19th South Shillong constituency. The awards will honour students who secured first division or above in Class X and XII examinations in the 2025–26 academic session across boards including SSLC, HSSLC, ICSE, CBSE, ISC and NIOS; only bona fide residents of the constituency are eligible. The programme will also recognise differently abled and underprivileged students who passed their exams in any division.
USTM’s recent recognition under Section 12(B) of the UGC Act makes the private university eligible for central assistance, UGC-funded schemes, research grants and faculty-development programmes, and is expected to open doors for international collaborations. Chancellor Mahbubul Hoque described the recognition as “a proud moment for the entire USTM family” and a testament to the university’s commitment to quality education and research, while Vice-Chancellor Prof. G.D. Sharma said the status reflects adherence to high academic standards and will strengthen the institution’s research and learning ecosystem.
