Nagaland Governor Reviews Agri Schemes, Urges Sustainable Farming
Kohima, July 28, 2026 — Nagaland Governor Nand Kishore Yadav on Tuesday chaired a review meeting of the Department of Agriculture at Lok Bhavan in Kohima, where officials outlined the department’s current schemes, achievements, challenges and plans to boost the state’s agriculture sector.
Officials told the meeting that nearly 70% of Nagaland’s population is engaged in agriculture and that women make up around 65% of the agricultural workforce. They presented the state’s agricultural profile, production targets, cropping intensity and progress across various programmes.
The department highlighted its work to raise productivity and farmers’ incomes by promoting sustainable and natural farming practices, strengthening irrigation and water-harvesting infrastructure, expanding mechanisation and improving market linkages. Officials also briefed the Governor on efforts to expand oil palm cultivation, scale up organic and natural farming, and strengthen farmer training and capacity building.
The review covered implementation of multiple central and state schemes, including Krishonnati Yojana, Pradhan Mantri Rashtriya Krishi Vikas Yojana (PM-RKVY), the National Food Security and Nutrition Mission (NFSNM), the National Mission on Edible Oils, Mission Organic Value Chain Development for North Eastern Region (MOVCD-NER), the National Mission on Natural Farming, PM-Kisan, the Sub-Mission on Agricultural Mechanization (SMAM), Per Drop More Crop (PDMC), Rainfed Area Development and various agroforestry initiatives.
Participants discussed persistent constraints such as fragmented landholdings, inadequate infrastructure, difficult terrain and poor road connectivity, and considered measures to address these challenges.
Governor Yadav commended the department’s work in implementing developmental programmes across the state and urged officials to strengthen sustainable agriculture, improve farmers’ livelihoods and ensure effective delivery of government schemes. He encouraged adoption of innovative approaches, better coordination among stakeholders and a stronger market orientation to make agriculture more productive and resilient.
Senior officers from the Governor’s Secretariat and officials from the Department of Agriculture attended the review meeting.
