The Nagaland government has approved the creation of an independent Directorate of Forensic Sciences to bolster crime investigation and expand the use of scientific evidence in criminal cases, Director General of Police Rupin Sharma announced on Monday as Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio flagged off a major fleet induction at Chumoukedima Police Complex. The move aims to modernise forensic capacity across the state and strengthen investigative outcomes using technical and scientific methods.
At the event, Rio flagged off 549 police vehicles and 12 mobile forensic vans procured for Rs 81.65 crore under the Assistance to States and Union Territories for Modernisation of Police Scheme 2025–26. The vehicles form part of a broader police modernisation package under which Nagaland has received nearly Rs 150 crore to upgrade policing infrastructure statewide.
Rio said improved transport is essential for police working in Nagaland’s hilly and challenging terrain and noted the new fleet will replace roughly 40% of the existing vehicles. He urged officers to use and maintain the new equipment properly to ensure longevity and operational readiness.
The 12 mobile forensic vans have already been dispatched to district police units, Rio added, and more vans will be procured in the coming years to expand on-site forensic services, evidence collection and scene-of-crime capabilities across the state.
DGP Rupin Sharma said the new Directorate of Forensic Sciences will initially operate under the police department before being spun off as an independent body. He said the directorate will promote greater use of forensic evidence and scientific techniques in investigations, improving case resolution and supporting prosecutions.
Rio also emphasised the need to strengthen cyber forensics, digital evidence analysis, financial investigation and data analytics to effectively implement the country’s new criminal laws, signalling a broader shift toward technology-driven policing and investigative reforms.
To reinforce laboratory capacity, the police headquarters has proposed fresh recruitment through the Nagaland Public Service Commission to bolster the State Forensic Science Laboratory. The induction package additionally includes ambulances and water tankers, which the government said will improve emergency response and public services in the state.
