New Delhi, July 27 — The Department of Posts has, for the first time, formally defined a “document” that will attract lower shipping rates and has notified new pricing for its 24 Speed Post and 48 Speed Post services, effective August 1 for retail customers. The move also sets separate bulk-contract rates, while promising guaranteed delivery within 24 and 48 hours respectively for the two services in cities where they operate.
Under the notification, items classified as documents include letters and printed or complimentary items with no resale value, banking, financial and insurance materials such as welcome kits, passbooks, cheque books, bank statements and plastic cards (debit and credit cards), and government documents including PAN, Aadhaar, electoral photo identity cards, passports and driving licences. The document category will also cover items up to 500 grams-for example, Rakhi envelopes and greeting cards-so long as they are not merchandise or commercial goods. “All items other than the items referred to in Note 1 shall be dealt with under parcel category,” the notification said.
Retail service rates remain unchanged overall, but the department has specified price slabs for the letter/document category and announced contractual bulk rates. For retail customers using 24 Speed Post, prices will range from Rs 38 to Rs 186 apiece depending on weight and destination. A local 24-hour delivery for items under 50 grams is priced at Rs 38, while pan-India delivery for the same weight is Rs 94 (both excluding GST). The 51–250 gram slab is priced between Rs 118 and Rs 154, and the 251–500 gram slab between Rs 140 and Rs 186. The 48 Speed Post retail fares range from Rs 61 to Rs 121 based on weight and destination.
Contractual bulk customers will pay between Rs 38 and Rs 100 for 24-hour service and between Rs 48 and Rs 72 for 48-hour service, the department said. The new 24 Speed Post and 48 Speed Post offerings are currently available only in six cities: Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata, Bengaluru and Hyderabad. (PTI)
