Videos and images of submerged villages and stranded families continue to surface as Assam grapples with the aftermath of severe flooding that has left 5.24 lakh people across 763 villages affected and pushed the statewide death toll to 68 after two more fatalities were reported in Charaideo. While floodwaters have begun to recede in many places, relief agencies say large swathes remain inundated and communities are struggling to recover.
Officials reported the Dhansiri (South) at Numaligarh as the only river still flowing above the danger level, and nearly 48,742 hectares of crop land remain under water, threatening livelihoods and the upcoming agricultural season. The number of affected districts has fallen to nine, but officials caution that the humanitarian impact remains severe across those areas.
Relief and rehabilitation operations are underway statewide. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said state ministers will personally reach affected areas to coordinate rehabilitation, with immediate priorities focused on the worst-hit districts of Sivasagar, Jorhat and Golaghat. Assam Power Distribution Company Ltd teams are carrying out safety inspections to enable phased restoration of electricity in Sivasagar, Jorhat, Charaideo, Dhubri, Bongaigaon and other impacted areas, after supplies were suspended as a precaution during the floods.
Central and state agencies are working together on rescue and relief. Union minister Sarbananda Sonowal described the situation as “very serious,” and said the Centre and Assam government are coordinating relief efforts; he also noted that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been closely monitoring the crisis and remained in touch with the chief minister. The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) continue search-and-rescue and relief distribution, and a high-level inter-ministerial team has arrived to assess needs on the ground.
As waters recede in places, circulating videos are offering a stark view of destroyed homes, displaced families and lost cattle, underscoring the scale of human and economic loss. Assam-born singer Papon appealed in a video message to people in India and abroad to help those affected, urging support for relief efforts as communities work to rebuild.
