Lady Keane College in Shillong celebrated its 91st Foundation Day on Saturday, marking nine decades of service to women’s education under the theme “Building Tomorrow with 91 Years of Legacy.” The event highlighted the college’s long-standing role in advancing academic excellence and empowering women across Meghalaya and the Northeast.
Education Minister Lahkmen Rymbui congratulated the institution for shaping generations of women leaders and for its broader social contribution. He noted the government’s continued investment in education and youth development and urged students, teachers, alumni and other stakeholders to work together to strengthen Meghalaya’s education ecosystem. “Lady Keane College is a symbol of excellence whose contributions extend beyond academics to the empowerment of women and society at large,” Rymbui said.
Rymbui also reflected on the changing nature of communication in the digital era, saying technology has transformed how messages travel but that the responsibility to deliver meaningful, impactful communication remains unchanged. At the ceremony he released the college magazine, Keanean Journal of Arts, and the institution’s annual history magazine.
H B D Sangma, Director of Higher and Technical Education, described Lady Keane as a “beacon of excellence” and encouraged students to look beyond classroom learning. She urged them to embrace innovation, creativity, critical thinking, entrepreneurship and emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence. “While academic qualifications open opportunities, qualities such as character, attitude, competence, creativity, and lifelong learning ultimately determine success,” the director emphasised.
The college honoured outstanding students, faculty members and institutional bodies with awards during the celebrations, underscoring its commitment to nurturing talent and leadership among women across the region.
