Relief as CJP Calls Off NEET Protest After Centre Accepts Demands

The Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) on Saturday called off its month‑long protest over the NEET‑UG controversy after the Centre accepted all its key demands, including the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan and the withdrawal of FIRs lodged against demonstrators. CJP spokesperson Saurav Das announced the end of the agitation following a fourth round of talks with the government, urging protesters to disperse peacefully. “As the government accepted all our demands, we call off our protests with immediate effect,” he said.

The breakthrough followed Pradhan’s resignation to Prime Minister Narendra Modi earlier on Saturday, a move the CJP had made its principal demand. The fourth round of negotiations took place at the Constitution Club of India and was led for the Centre by Union Ministers J P Nadda and Jitendra Singh. The CJP delegation included spokespersons Saurav Das and Ashutosh Ranka.

Addressing reporters at the joint press briefing, Health Minister J P Nadda said the government would provide “honourable compensation”, in line with existing rules, to families of students who died by suicide after the cancellation of the May 3 NEET‑UG examination. Nadda also announced that all FIRs registered during the agitation would be withdrawn. “The government will take steps for withdrawal of FIRs against protesters,” he said.

Saturday’s talks focused on two outstanding demands: compensation for bereaved families and withdrawal of criminal cases against protesters. The CJP had earlier sought Rs 1 crore for each family that lost a student to suicide following the NEET‑UG cancellation.

The agitation, which began with a continuous sit‑in at Jantar Mantar on June 20, demanded accountability for the NEET‑UG 2026 paper leak, probe into alleged irregularities in the CBSE’s on‑screen marking process, and broader reforms in the conduct of public examinations. The movement drew thousands of students nationwide and secured support from several opposition parties.

Tensions escalated on July 20 when thousands answered the CJP’s ‘Sansad Chalo’ call and marched towards Parliament; police used batons and tear gas to stop the march, leaving scores injured. Multiple rounds of talks between the CJP and the government followed, culminating in Saturday’s resolution after the Centre accepted the protesters’ core demands.
