Bharat Sevashram Sangha’s Shillong branch has dispatched its first consignment of relief materials for people affected by the ongoing floods in Upper Assam, the organisation said. Sent under the leadership of Swami Purnabratananda, the supplies will be routed through the Sangha’s Nagaon branch for distribution in Nagaon, Jorhat and adjoining flood-hit areas.
The distribution is being coordinated on the ground by Brahmachari Sisir Maharaj of the Nagaon Ashram, with logistical support from Swami Chimoyananda of the Dimapur branch. The Sangha described the shipment as the first tranche of relief being moved under Swami Purnabratananda’s leadership.
The consignment includes 1,000 kg of bleaching powder, 300 kg of phenyl, 400 kg of rice, 300 kg of chira (flattened rice), 2,000 bottles of drinking water, 200 sarees, 1,000 bathing soaps, 550 packets of biscuits and two spray machines. These items are intended to meet immediate needs for drinking water, sanitation and basic food and hygiene supplies in affected communities.
Bharat Sevashram Sangha is a spiritual organisation with a wide volunteer network in India and abroad, known for community relief work, assistance to the poor and provision of healthcare services. The Sangha’s mobilization in Assam forms part of broader civil-society relief efforts responding to the disaster.
The flood situation in Assam continued to worsen on Friday, with the death toll reported at 47 after six more fatalities in the past 24 hours. According to the latest bulletin from the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), more than 7.21 lakh people are now affected across 11 districts.
Authorities say 103 relief camps are sheltering 24,124 displaced people, and 255 relief distribution centres have been established to provide food, drinking water and other essentials. Floodwaters have submerged 25,375.44 hectares of agricultural land and caused extensive damage to embankments, roads and bridges in several districts.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma attributed the devastation to unprecedented rainfall in Nagaland and parts of Assam, and dismissed speculation that cloudbursts or releases from hydroelectric projects were responsible. The Sangha’s convoy aims to provide immediate relief while longer-term recovery and infrastructure repair continue.
