Tense CJP Protest in Delhi: Opposition Marches to PM Residence
The political confrontation over the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP)-led protests intensified on Tuesday, July 21, 2026, as Opposition leaders marched to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s residence while the Centre signalled it was open to talks with the demonstrators. The escalation followed Monday’s “Sansad Chalo” march in Delhi, which ended in clashes with police, left several protesters injured and set off a fresh standoff between the government and the Opposition.
The clashes on Monday, July 20, 2026, left at least one protester on a ventilator; doctors on Tuesday said her condition was stable and that she was recovering. Protesters remain assembled at Jantar Mantar, where the CJP has announced a continuing sit-in even as it suspended further marches toward Parliament to reduce the risk of more injuries.
Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi led the political outcry on July 21, saying Opposition MPs marched to the prime minister’s residence to demand accountability for the police action during Monday’s protests. In a post on X, Gandhi wrote: “We have marched to PM Modi’s house to demand answers from him for the brutalities against young students yesterday,” and accused the government of refusing to answer questions or allow a parliamentary debate on the violence.
Despite the heightened tensions, the Centre indicated willingness to engage. According to a News18 report cited by government officials, the Centre is “not averse to talking,” and a decision on further engagement with student representatives is expected shortly. The outreach follows a meeting on Monday, July 20, in which Union Minister and former BJP president JP Nadda met a CJP delegation.
Delhi Police have registered FIRs alleging violence and vandalism during the “Sansad Chalo” march, while protest leaders have accused police of using excessive force. Activist Sonam Wangchuk, a prominent supporter of the movement, entered the 24th day of an indefinite hunger strike on July 21, demanding that key protest demands — including the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan — be met before he ends his fast.
The CJP also moved to discipline its own ranks after videos of spokesperson Vijeta Dahiya surfaced on social media amid the police action. In a statement posted on X, the party said it “strongly condemns” Dahiya’s conduct, called it “deeply insensitive,” and announced he had been removed as spokesperson and relieved of official duties with immediate effect.
As protests continue at Jantar Mantar and political leaders press their demands, the immediate question is whether renewed talks will defuse tensions or whether confrontations and legal actions will further polarise the standoff.
